Killer Mike "Monster" Review

  “Akshon (yeah!)” is of course one of the hits of this one. I think it was supposed to be called AK-47 but Big Boi said nobody would support a track called AK-47 by a artist named Killer Mike, maybe he was right! Anyway, the song got the same type of beat the first song had but it´s not as good in my ears, still on point but not no classic!

  “Rap Is Dead” however is really cool. “B.I.G is Dead!/Pac is Dead!/My Music´s Dead!” goes the wild out screaming through the chorus. Mike makes the statement Fuck rap! On the song which might sound controversial but it´s an important statement as well, we need to stop mix rap with pop too much. Not saying no names but some artists from different side’s don´t take care of our hip-hop culture like they should in my, and many others eyes! Lovely track!

  “Scared Straight” is more mid-tempo and not delivered aggressive but however with a critical flow, and by that I mean that he mean what he says. Situation getting real so Mike is serious!

  “All 4 U” samples some old soul song in a way that East Coast cats Nas and Jay-Z has been doing. The whole beat is in a way East Coast sounding, but Mike deals with the beat like he always does. He becomes one with the damn beat, no time to mess around just eating it up! I was doubtful when I heard it first but the way he delivered his painful childhood stories over an okay beat is straight up real!

  “A.D.I.D.A.S.” which of course means All Day I Dream About Sex features none other then his mentor Big Boi. Between Big and Dre I would have to say that Big is the tighter rapper. I thought Dre was the better on the first two CDs but nowadays Big just on another level. But Dre still great! Anyway the funny reggae influence to the beat works great. And with rhymes like; “We need to keep it on the hush hush on the downlow/Like R. Kelly and youngstuurrs/But over 18 only/cause baby I´m no purrv!” yeah with rhymes like that you can´t stop laughing! And humor is an element of rap most MC´s totally done forgot that´s why I´m glad we got people like Mike and of course Ludacris!

  On “Creep Show” we find Mike exchanging rhymes with Bizarre of D-12 (yes Eminem´s group). Bizarre is another rapper I would like to add to the list above of humorous rappers. He delivers a great verse here, really love this song!

  “I Know I Love” is Mike´s attempt at delivering a track in the “classic rap love songs” section. Can´t say if he succeed or not yet but the song is actually easy to like. Some rappers try to sing when they are to deliver a love song but Mike don´t change his delivery style, he straight up kills the beat, in a lovely way of course!

  “Home Of The Brave” features label mate and Dungeon Family member Slimm Calhoun who´s album was okay but I hope we get to see him deliver another one cause he can without a doubt deliver a really tight effort. Anyhow this track is a big one. Many instruments and sounds used on the beat. I really love this one!

  “L.I.V.E.” is not that good and the same goes for “Blow (Get Down)” not the worst ever don´t get it twisted but the songs up to these two have all had a above average rating and those are more average in my ears at least, simpler beats and rhymes.

  “Sex Drugs Rap and Roll” explains what Killer Mike is about. They got a rock guitar element to the beat that I usually wouldn´t like but it works okay here and the delivery he got on this song is probably the best thing about the song!

  “Dragon” features the apparently late Fags Block. A really harmonized song that goes straight to ya heart with a dedication to Block! Mike let it be known retaliation is a must when they took his potna!

  They end the album with a remix of “Ak-shon” features Bun-B, T.I. and Bone Crusher. Sometimes mixes are unnecessary but this version is 3 times better then the original, definite slamming!

  This album was worth the pretty short wait it had! And it really feel like a Killer Mike CD, we don´t find OutKast on each and every song which is good, we get to know Mike instead of being re-introduced to Big and Dre. This feels like an album Mike had big control of. I really can recommend this album to pretty much any rap fan. It´s not as soulful as an OutKast album, but that´s what´s good Mike is not Dre he did it his way on the Monster album!
